ipodnano.gifIt’s only been five years, but Apple Inc. has sold an amazing 100 million iPods and is now touting it as the fastest selling music player in history” that appeals to audiences young and old. Apple has also said that iTunes service has sold more than 2.5 billion songs, 50 million television shows and more than 1.3 million movies.

This number is a testament to the marketing brilliance that CEO Steve Jobs has led over at Apple. Apple has redefined the way the people interact with their music and now is poised to redefine the way we look at all entertainment media. Its iPod video was just a start… it enabled us to carry our favorite TV shows and music in our pocket.

But with the coming of the iPhone, consumers are going to be walking libraries of media and entertainment. Even the Apple TV has a shot at redefined how we consume media in our homes.

What’s all of this leading to? Has the Compact Disc’s death sentence been written? Will there be a day when movie releases will be exclusively online? It’s getting much riskier to have high budget movies these days with actors getting paid huge amounts of money and production costs going through the roof.

An online distribution paradigm might work for smaller budget movies and independent films. Consumers just have to get trained to trade in the movie theater ambiance for their living rooms.
