The man whose rule was such that “no woman could deny him, no man could defy him and no one could control him” is coming to Showtime. On April 1, see Jonathan Rhys Meyers as sex-icon Henry VIII in The Tudors.
The Tudors is the ambitious creation of Michael Hirst that begins with the lesser known tale of King Henry VIII’s early days, before Ann Boleyn. How do you start off a story that every high-school history class is familiar with? You do it with a dramatic display of sex, butchery, war-lust, and political subterfuge. The young, ambitious monarch is driven by power-lust and a desire for a male heir. His marriage to Katherine of Aragon, was tainted with stillborn children, and a son who died within 26 days. Cardinal Wolsey, a master of political manipulation and the king’s confidant, is played by Sam Neill.
After watching the first two episodes, I can honestly say that The Tudors is a promising new show that will be talked about week after week at water-coolers around the nation. The brilliant cinematography brings this intriguing fast-paced story-arch to life, with a little something for everybody.
The 10-part series kicks-off on Sunday, April 1 at 10pm E/T. To mark the occasion, Showtime is streaming the first two episodes of this royal event. You can click here to view the full exclusive preview of episodes 1 and 2.
