$5. That was the cover charge. “Ambush.” That was the suggestion thrown out by a rowdy crowd of beer-drinking New Yorkers and tourists. For the next thirty minutes, the Upright Citizens Brigade’s newest Harold-ensemble Bastian captivated the audience with a hysterical session of long-form improv that could wake Del Close from the grave.

Bastian is comprised of Brian Barrett, Maggie Carey, Adam Frucci, Brandon Gardner, Lydia Hensler, Molly Lloyd, Oscar Magallanes, and John Murray. The Harold Team got off to a rocky start after forming in late January. But, two months later, they are already performing like a seasoned Harold Team. For those who don’t know, the Harold is a 30-minute improv structure pioneered by Del Close.

The ensemble performed with seemless support from its members. A great moment was when John Murray and Brian Barrett played scientists working on sound sensitive viruses. Lydia and Molly joined them on stage in a split-screen to become the viruses that responded to sound. The more Brian talked the more volatile and contagious Lydia and Molly became.

Unfortunately, if you missed Tuesday night’s show, you’ll never get to see it again. And words could never express the magic that happens on stage in long-form improv. That’s the beauty and tragedy of improv. But, luckily you can see Bastian and other Harold teams every Tuesday night at the UCB Theatre, so be sure to check the schedule for details.
