Fox has picked up the intense serial drama Prison Break for a third season.
Details are pretty skimpy at this point, but it looks like main actors Wentworth Miller (Michael Scofield) and Dominic Purcell (Lincoln Burrows) will definitely be back along with over half of the rest of the remaining cast.
“It essentially will be a new chapter,” creator/executive producer Paul Scheuring said. “It’s going to return to the fundamental conceit, to the roots of what the show was about. They [the characters] got scattered in the winds–their stories became separate and defused,” Scheuring said. “They will come back together again, [and] their conflicts and interactions will return.” ”
Given that there aren’t too many good shows on TV nowadays, I think that this is overall good news. Prison Break has been entertaining since Day 1 and has presented us with some characters, good and bad, that we care about. I’m a little hesitant though that re-inventing the show and stretching it out will taint the excellence of seasons 1 and 2. No one likes to see a heavyweight champ fight past his prime… and I definitely would like to forget the Washington Wizards Michael Jordan as opposed to the Chicago Bulls one.

they should’ve ended it at 2 seasons.
Yogizilla,
You’re right about the character development on PB vs. Lost.. basically no comparison!
I love PB… I actually didn’t watch the first season on the air.. I just happened to get it when I signed up from Netflix in Sept 06 (I had heard it was exciting in the way 24 is). There was no looking back once I started watching.. then I had to catch up to season 2 which had already started.
It’s been an intense ride and part of me wants to see them end it strong.. while another wants me to see it stay around. I guess only time will tell how well they continue to develop the series!
Bravo!
I couldn’t have said it better myself. When Prison Break went beyond one season, I had mixed feelings to boot. On one side, I loved the characters and wanted to see how each of their individual stories developed. I knew that everyone’s roads would cross at some point so seeing that manifest tself was great. On the other side, my concern was that this felt like a mini-series-caliber show and I felt they would stretch it out too far.
If you look at Lost, you see a similarity in that you sometimes wonder how much longer the writers can milk the story. Unlike Lost, Prison Break hasn’t had much filler and has been very intriguing through and through, in my opinion. The story and character development alike are very deliberate whereas Lost makes you feel that maybe, just maybe, this is just some sort of weird social experiment…
In any case, Prison Break has set the bar high for itself, just as it’s prime-time partner, 24, has done. You have to wonder if there is a foreseeable end in the near future. What are their plans for the show? At least for Lost, the writers have finally conceded and returned to actually having direction and commitment. They’ve set an episode limit for Lost and I think Prison Break may need the same thing to make sure the quality stays in check.
BTW, the Michael Jordan metaphor was perfect - hyperbole at it’s best, I’d say! Sadly, I happen to be one of those sad Chicago Bulls fans, mainly because the Knicks are a very depressing team to follow. “Old school” basketball references earn you an instant A+ in my book.
A++ on this piece all the way!!
