A long time ago, in a galaxy far away there existed a group of heroes who time and time again triumphed over the forces of evil. No, I’m not referring to Luke Skywalker and the infamous Star Wars rebellion forces. The heroes were known simply as G.I. Joe or the Joes for short. Whether they faced off against the forces of Cobra or other vile terrorist organizations, the Joes would always miraculously snatch victory from defeat. But there was one enemy G.I. Joe could not overcome. No it wasn’t Destro, Serpentor or even Cobra-La. It was the iron-hand of the Corporation.
Joe fans who grew up in the 1980s watching G.I. Joe and The Transformers on TV, were excited when they learned their childhood heroes would be making their way back home on DVD. Rhino had the license from Sunbow to create the DVDs. All was right in the world. The Transformers came first, rereleasing three full seasons and an animated feature on DVD. Next up was GI Joe. They released the original 1983 mini series first, comprised of two five-part epic sagas: “G.I. Joe A Real American Hero!” and “The Revenge of Cobra Seasons One.” Next came Season One, parts 1 and 2 first. Fans around the world were overjoyed. After that came Season 2 part 1. Finally, Rhino released NOTHING. Yes. Nothing.
In 2005, Rhino lost the renewal of its licensing from Sunbow. Sony Music had bought the rights out. Was this one last attempt by Cobra Commander to beat GI Joe through corporate financing? Maybe Extensive Enterprises was really Sony Music all along, and the CEO and COO are Tomax and Xamot? We may never know the truth. All we do know is that GI Joe Season 2 part 2 never saw the light of day. Not to mention Season 3, where Storm Shadow is finally back where he belongs on the side of right.
There still may be hope for the Real American Heroes though. You can send Sony feedback via their webform here (Choose Sony Wonder under the subject pulldown)
