Rumors are circulating on the web that fans of 80s cartoons are about to get another injection of bliss a la TMNT/Transformers.
Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is working on getting a script for a live action G.I. Joe movie based on the comic book and the cartoon series. This is very preliminary and there’s no release date scheduled yet. But the important thing is that this project is being considered…period.
It’s also reported that Lorenzo wants Mark Wahlberg to play the character Duke. I actually think this may be a decent choice - Marky Mark has grown on me as an actor in the past couple of years with The Italian Job, Four Brothers, and his role in The Departed. As long as his performance isn’t gimmicky, I’m with it.
More importantly is what other characters will show up in the movie.. and who will be cast as them. With any Joes production, you’ve got to have Cobra Commander, Destro, Shipwreck, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Lady J, and Scarlet. And it would be even better if they extend this into a franchise and have my boy Serpentor show up as the mega-villain.
But, I’d like to hear what you guys think, what other characters should show up and who should be cast into those roles?
I want to see Cobra’s own saboteur extraordinaire, Firefly, blow up plenty of buildings and military hardware. I just can’t think of an actor right who should portray him cause I’m not big on following hollywood actors. And if Firefly is in the new film, his uniform should be duplicated detail for detail, with nothing left out.
Yea, Jason Statham would be cool. I’m sure most people don’t even know snake-eyes was white.
Only thing is, the scripters may mess up Snake-Eyes by trying to give him a speaking role. That’s the one thing that I hated about the 80s cartoon. Duke got Snake’s girl Scarlett cause Snake couldn’t talk. BS
My vote is for the guy from The Transporter as Snake Eyes.

this is a great idea, although I can just picture the execution being cheesy. Leave my joes the way i remember them from the 80s!
Just make sure they get a real Scottsman for Destro. Not those terrible actors they had on GI Joe sigma 6

Your ol’ pal Bags has a love/hate feeling on this movie making it to the Big Screen. Every five years or so rumors circulate about GI Joe finally getting a live action movie. Fans of the old 80s Larry Hama comic days were never pleased with the original GI Joe cartoon movie adaption. Why? Cobra La for one. They took the fun fictional element of GI Joe and warped it with a completely random fantasy element of Spores and a pseduo-alien/pre-caveman species lead by Golobulus. Nothing against Burgess Meredith’s brilliant Voice work, but this hurt a cartoon that was already lacking realism due to FCC restrictions. Which is also one of the reasons, many will recall, caused the Transformers to leave the air in America, and continue to take root in Japan for several years after folks in the US thought the series was over.
In prior rumors, people said Snake-Eyes would be played by Jean Claude Van Damme. Which would have been terrible. Then again Snake-eyes was a mute so this may have worked out.
Marky Wahlberg is a definite go for Duke. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Michael Clarke Duncan play Roadblock (without the corny rhyming) since both characters debuted in the original Larry Hama series together. I’d give the Baroness to Angelina Jolie hands down. I feel Destro should be cast by a genuine new talent Scottish actor. Cobra Commander needs a sinister charactor, no cheezy casting please. A hero is only as good as the villain. Lets go with Christian Bale for now, or an unknown talent.
Oh and PLEAAAASE, just because Snake-eyes can’t talk, don’t ruin the story arch by making Scarlett, Duke’s love interest instead.
I was always a fan of Quick Kick. I think they shouldn’t go for big time actors for this movie.. there’s so many GOOD characters in GI Joe that getting A listers would take away from the movie. IMO
I’d like to see Zartan and of course Tomax and Xamot
