spiderman2.jpgTobey Maguire has made it known that Spider-Man 3 will be the last time he dons the red and blue hero suit.

According to Tobey :

“To me it seems like this is a natural point for the team to break up because we have a lot of story conclusions that were going along for the main characters for the first two movies and we kind of tie almost everything up for the third movie. It feels like a trilogy to me and it feels like the end.”

Spider-Man 1, 2, and 3 director Sam Raimi feels slightly otherwise. He’s seriously considering making a fourth. But it’s good to hear that he wouldn’t do it without Tobey. I wouldn’t want to see the Spiderman franchise become reminiscent of Batman in the 1990s, post Michael Keaton. Batman and Batman Returns were great movies, but the follow-ups featuring Val Kilmer and George Clooney as the caped crusader are quite possibly the most unbearable heaps of crap I’ve ever seen. While you can’t completely blame the actors (see the weak dialogue, outrageous stunts, and sheer over-the-topness of Batman Forever and Batman & Robin), you can’t say that it helps to change the actors.

Anyway…good for Tobey. I think it’s much better to end something with it on top, rather than running into the ground just to make some extra money. And from the looks of the preview, Spider-Man 3 will challenge its 2 predecessors for the best of the trilogy spot.
