Bobby Moresco brought you the Acadamy Award winning movies “Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash.” Now he’s back with his latest creation the Black Donnellys. On Feb 26., the premier of the Black Donnellys followed NBCs current ratings topper Heroes. The show centers around the Donnellys, four inseparable Black Irish brothers. The show gets its name from the Black Irish, a term for people of Irish descent with black hair.
The Black Donnellys starts off slow with a narration by Joey “Ice Cream” from inside prison. The narration format is reminiscent of HBO’s Oz except Joey isn’t such a reliable narrator which adds levity to this engaging storyline. The show’s pace quickly picks up as viewers are drawn into the engaging character of Tommy Donnelly, an aspiring artist, who loves his brothers. Tommy’s going to school for art, and is trying to make a life for himself in outside of his boyhood antics. His only problem is that the family always comes first. No matter what atrocities his three brothers commit, from talking to the cops to driving stolen trucks, Tommy is always there to back them up.
The Donnellys is an emotionally gripping coming of age tale, an amalgamation of stories like The Godfather and the Sopranos. The difference is that this gang mafioso tale centers around the Irish instead of Italians. But don’t count them out. The Mafia shows up when the Donnellys think they can bite off more than they can chew.
The story is one that will immediately create a cult following of organized crime film lovers. Top notch acting and directing coupled with a superpowered-post Heroes time slot will ensure another success for Bobby Moresco and NBC.
