There was once a time when films about New York City were filmed outside of New York City. Production companies felt building the falsetto New York City skyline would save them money and a lot of extra hassle. As of 2006, NYC is back on the map as a prime spot for production. The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting reported nearly a 10% gain in shoot days in the city from 2005(31,578) to 2006(34,718), a new record for the city that doesn’t sleep.
Much of New York’s renewed success is thanks to “Made in NY” Incentive Program. With a combination of tax and marketing credits coupled with expanded customer services for production, this program makes it more attractive than ever to shoot in the five boroughs. The benefits don’t stop with the production companies. This industry supports over 100,000 New Yorkers. Commission Chief Katherine Oliver said, “the ‘Made in NY’ program has created thousands of new jobs by bringing $2.4 billion in business to New York over the past two years.”
Some television titles include: Law & Order, The Knights of Prosperity, Six Degrees (now in tv limbo) and 30 Rock. Approximately 276 films were filmed in NYC, including American Gangser and The Brave One. GOOD. This is the greatest city in the world, perfect for making films.
