Unless you’ve had the unfortunate priviledge of living under a rock, you’ve heard that the conclusion to one of the greatest games ever is coming this Fall. Halo 3 by Bungie will conclude the Halo saga. Will Master Chief finally be able to rest? We don’t know. But this Fall Master Chief will be battling more than the Flood. Two other first-person shooters will be released this fall.

The first is TimeShift, from Saber Interactive. Should Bungie be afraid? Well, TimeShift will be the first game that will allow gamers to slow, stop and reverse the flow of time during relentless shootouts. Gaming vets will find this feature vaguely reminiscent of Prince of Persia, but it definitely remains a concern for Bungie.

The second title is Huxley, the first Massively Multiplayer First Person Shooter, by Epic Games. The game utilizes the Unreal Engine 3, AGEIA’s Novodex Physics API, and WebZen’s networking technology to bring gamers into the apocalyptic world inspired by Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. What does that mean for you? Imagine playing over a hundred simultaneous battles with 5,000 players per server and each battle being as MASSSSIVE as 200 opponents. Impressive? To say the least, yes.

So what’s Bungie going to do about these FPS threats? Well they’ve already decided to release a beta version of Halo 3 online in the Spring, well in advance of the rival FPS. Just make sure to preorder Crackdown so you can get a head start on the action. Bungie’s already got the audience, everyone’s been waiting patiently for Halo 3. Master Chief just has to hope that the loyal finds won’t find comfort in the arms of another FPS. The Bag Man doubts it. Gamers will just have to shill out more cash this Fall, and enjoy the added bliss, and lose a few more hours of sleep.
