Apple’s iTunes storefront will now carry Sundance Film Shorts for 1.99. The 25 year old festival kicks off January 18th in Park City, Utah with free streaming via the Sundance website. Director of programming John Cooper states, “Streaming on our site is not the same as owning, and there seems to be a world out there for both.”

This is an exciting moment for filmmakers, as they Apple has agreed to give them a handsome percentage of the purchase price. Plus filmmakers are under no obligation in regards to distribution. So far 33 of the 71 narrative, documentary and animation shorts are slated for distribution via Sundance and iTunes with more on the way.

Cooper says, Sundance will hold off on feature films for now, stating. “What Sundance is really known for is as a platform for people to sell their films, and that’s mainly the feature film.”
