The latest show on ABC, ‘Daybreak,’ stars Taye Diggs as a detective Brett Hopper. The decorated cop’s life is turned upside down when he is framed for the murder of state attorney, Alberto Garza. Ok, we’ve seen this plot before, distinguished cop gets framed by people close to him and has to break the law he swore to uphold in order to clear his name.
So aside from staring into Taye’s dreamy eyes, what’s supposed to get viewers watching this show week after week? The creator of “Day Break,” Paul Zbyszewski, has added this interesting twist: Detective Hopper must relive the events of the day until he finds out the truth behind Garza’s murder. Every day, Hopper wakes up at exactly 6:17, and remembers everything that happened when he first lived through that day. If someone dies, Hopper can simply go to sleep, wake up and the deceased will be alive and ticking just like they were at the start of the day.
Sound simple? Well it’s not. Whenever Hopper falls asleep, he may wake to a new day, but his body maintains all the injuries of the day before. Whether its a broken rib, a gunshot wound, or the loss of friend, Hopper’s body and mind retains all the physical and emotional damage. Weird, I know.
Sound familiar? That’s because it is. Outside of waking up to a gunshot wound and no one remembering you got shot, “Day Break” is at best “Negotiator” meets “Groundhog Day” meets “24.” And although most loved “Negotiator,” practically everyone hated “Groundhog Day.” We had enough runaround in that movie, why bring it to TV? Who wants to see the same redundant plot over and over and over again with a slightly different twist each time? True, everything happens in a day like “24″ but you lose the rush after seeing the same day, condensed to thirty minutes, played out over fifty million times.
What this show does do, is give Taye a chance to show his stuff as an action hero and breakout from being typecast into a relationship drama. I’ll give this show one thing, the premier show was entertaining. I didn’t fall asleep, and finished my entire bag of popcorn. But will that keep me watching from week to week? It’s doubtful past week four, tops, unless something major happens.

I got you both beat. Why is Internal Affairs always dirty? TELL ME - I DEMAND ANSWERS
I’ll do you one better. why does it always have to be the “decorated black cop” who gets framed???????
why does there always have to be some eastern european guy with tanks behind everything?
the shows more of a ‘Lost’ knock off than ‘24′… i just don’t know how they’ll make it to a second season
