The recurring theme of the surface hiding what’s beneath was in full effect on tonight’s episode of Ugly Betty, entitled “Trust, Lust, and Must”. More ugliness manifested out of the pretty people and we find out that Betty’s dad has been keeping a very dark secret.
Going in, I was very excited knowing that my homegirl Salma Hayek would be guest starring. Hayek plays Sofia Reyes, an ad executive new to Mode Magazine and has caught the attention on mode Editor in Chief Daniel. Mr. Mode himself tries his best to sweet talk Ms. Reyes, but to no avail. In fact, he only gets so far as to piss her off for gawking at her. Overall, Salma’s appearance was a bit mysterious and I here that we’ll see her develop this character over four episodes. Hopefully, she’ll make this more than a force attempt at getting in front of the camera on her own series, so stay tuned.
On the Amanda side of things, I’m getting really tired of her ‘broken-on-the-inside’ sob story. Are we to feel even more sorry for her just because she keeps throwing herself at Daniel any time it’s convenient for him? Get some self respect girl!
On the home front, after what seemed like a saga, Betty and Hilda secure an immigration lawyer (one Debi Mazar from HBOs Entourage) for their Dad. However, pops drops an episode ending bombshell by telling his daughters that he killed his wife’s ex-husband many years ago.
Oh yeah, they also continue the Wilhelmina storyline with her daughter, but it was quite boring and borderline annoying.
Overall, this episode was a tad bit slow since the main plot points surrounded supporting characters. But, hopefully in the long run we deem it as necessary, given that character development is a very important component of any well respected series. I personally was looking for the same comedic wit as in other episodes, but it wasn’t there tonight.
Six episodes old, Ugly Betty is doing extremely well in the ratings department. The show has been renewed for a full season and looks like it’s going to be here for the long run.

I was so happy that Salma put Daniel in his place!
I thought the big issue was that the father was hiding his wife’s previous marriage.. Totally didn’t expect that he killed the man.
