DreamWorks Animation SKG announced that their Shrek franchise spin-off about sidekick character “Puss In Boots” will now become a 2010 theatrical release rather than a 2008 straight to DVD movie. “Puss-in-Boots” is a very popular character from the movie “Shrek 2” and was ingeniously voiced by Antonio Banderas.
I think this is a brilliant move by the animation studio, which is responsible for other non-Shrek hits “Antz“, Over The Hedge, Madagascar, and Shark Tale. I think Puss is a strong enough character to hold his own in a movie. Just the site of him donning Zorro hat, sword, and tall boots will have millions of kids begging their parents for a trip to the movies.
Even more, Banderas really owned that character and was incredibly funny. I’d even go so far as to say that he’s one of the few celebrities that actually voiced their particular animation character better than a professional voice actor could. You can add Shrek-mates Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy to this group as well as Robin Williams in “Robots” and Steve Carell in Over The Hedge. Here’s to hoping they don’t cast Justin Timberlake in this one though.
