Sean “Diddy” Combs is back on the scene (well I guess he’s never left it) with a new album called “Press Play” that hits stores this Tuesday. Anytime someone mentions Diddy, you hear a strong reaction and it’s either good or bad. “He’s corny, his music is copied and his ego is too big” Or “Diddy does it all, his business skills are like no other.” There aren’t many people that can be in the mix for over 15 years and still cause that type of reaction from people. Here’s my take on why the Artist formerly known as Puff Daddy is still relevant, and probably hotter than ever.
Press Play :
Diddy knows what he’s good at. It’s not being a lyricist, but rather being someone that shows people a good time. On Press Play, he brings the noise by teaming up with some heavy hitters in the music industry including Timbaland, Nas, Keyshia Cole, Jamie Foxx, Mary J. Blige, Twista, Kanye West and Cee-Lo. For the ladies, he’s also got a tracks with the Nicole from the Pussycat Dolls and Christina Aguilera. Yeah, this album might not be celebrated at Hip Hop Honors one day, but it will still sell. That guest list of artists will net a huge audience from young to old, hip hop to pop. People have always questioned his merit as a music artist, but let’s face it: Diddy’s dancing and partying have always been his key to success.
Community Man:
From running marathons to encouraging young people to vote, Diddy has always taken time to spread a positive message in the community. Most recently as part of a promotional tour, he has toured the country talking to high school children about the importance of staying in school. Not too bad for a 36 year old… having high schoolers think you’re still cool.
Making The Band:
In Danity Kane, Diddy has his own version of the Pussycat Dolls. After 3 seasons of the hit show on MTV, he’s still got a huge audience in the 13-25 year old female demographic. The group is now touring with Christina Aguilera and I’m sure that Diddy can opt for another season of the show just to stir up some more drama.
Mogul Man:
Everything else from cultivating new musical talent, to his Sean John clothing line, to influencing a new generation, Diddy is more of a brand name now than he’s every been. Yeah, he’s pompous, but he’s got $340+ Million in the bank to back it up and his mogul status is as high as it’s ever been. It’s all about engagement people. Diddy always has something going on that surround him with buzz and keeps him at the top of mind when it comes to hype. What’s next for Mr. Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop? A run for the presidency? He even says it himself in a track from Press Play: “The potential to be the first Black president/ iTunes download me in every resident.”
